WHERE DO WE COME FROM?
We look up into the night sky. The longer we look the more we see. There are millions and millions of stars, planets, galaxies, solar systems. We feel small. We really are a speck of dust on a speck of dust. By looking up we shift focus from ourselves to a vastness that deserves respect. It deflates our egos. As we look up and do some thinking we see there are three possibilities how all this came about: either nothing made matter or matter made mind or an eternal Mind made matter.
The Bible says: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1), The Bible contains God's message for us. It doesn't matter what language or translation it is. If we want it, we'll find the solution. The Bible calls it 'the gospel'. The word gospel means 'good news'. We start with John 3:16: "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." Everything in the Bible boils down to that simple, powerful summary.
WHY JESUS DIED
God loves us even though we've all broken His laws and deserve death. Breaking God's law is called sin. The Bible says "Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness." (1 John 3:4). The Bible says "The person who sins will die" (Ezekiel 18:20). Because God's love for us is so massive, He took our place by coming to earth in the person of Jesus and dying on the cross. Jesus died the death that was ours so we may have the life that is His. This is the heart of the Christian gospel.
To get the life God promises us we must believe this good news as a child believes. A child believes trustingly, almost naively. We then act on our belief by confessing all the bad stuff (sin) we have done. We confess to God in a private conversation. God will forgive us and accept us just as if we had never sinned. (That's called 'justification'.) We are regarded as if we are righteous because on the cross Jesus was regarded as if he was sin. "For our sake He [God] made Him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him [Jesus] we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21) Knowing this brings peace and great joy. The burden of guilt is lifted.
After we have decided to turn away from sin (repent) and have confessed our sins to God in private, we will find that the things we once hated we now love and the things we once loved we now hate. We will also find that the days ahead has highs and lows. But powerful addictions to gambling, drugs, alcohol, porn can be overcome by handing over our will power to the Holy Spirit and letting Him beat those addictions for us. To grow each day we feed our new nature through prayer and Bible reading. That is called 'sanctification'. The Bible says "Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18)
We'll all die but when Jesus comes back we'll be raised from the grave to live forever with Him. This will happen because Jesus beat the grave. It's His guarantee that we too will be raised when He returns. Christianity is the only religion whose founder has an empty grave. The Bible says "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves." (1 Thessalonians 4:16)
